Cooking class #3

We decided to make Cream of Chicken soup due to the recent cold weather! The kids all worked hard, and we enjoyed everything! The soup stock had already been homemade by Shelly, and we worked at chopping vegetables, extra base, and all the fixings...it turned out very well!

Cooking class Walshes/Hydes

We've decided, since we all do piano together on Tuesdays, to do a Cooking/Nutrition/Food safety class! We have had two classes so far, and the kids are doing a wonderful job....I am only a supervisor, they do all the work, including cleanup (though Shelly generally puts in more time than anyone!)

For our first class we made: Lemon Glazed Muffins......Sophie, Anna and Noelle grated Lemon rinds, squeezed lemons and mixed the wet ingredients. Christian, Ben and Ryan worked with most of the dry ingredients, and they all mixed and poured....All was going very well, and then came the oven. I was helping with this part, and didn't realize my racks were on a high tier...and guess what? Yep, they burned. The kids were great sports though...and we ate whatever we could, and they were still delicious. Might as well show them the things not to do also.....right? ;)

Second class: Pretzel Coated Chicken Breasts with Cheddar Mustard Sauce....courtesy Rachel Ray...

The boys did most of the prep work: grating, Vitamix, ingredients, etc., and of course, pounding the chicken breasts flat was a favorite. Sophie and Noelle breaded all the breasts and Anna did the sauce....we all enjoyed them for lunch! Salad and fruit, courtesy of Shelly!

Stay tuned for more dishes....coming soon!

Cooking class 2

Ryan and Noelle made their first ever Zucchini bread alone, with minimal help from me! It turned out very yummy, as you will see by the picture, we had to take a picture of half (they ate it as soon as it came out of the oven!) I love the recipes by Deborah Katzen (very little sugar but tons of flavor!)

Middle Ages study - revival Mosaics

The kids are learning about the Middle Ages in Story of the World, and we chose an Italian revivalist theme for our project...mosaics. Here are two of the mosaics: Ryan's parrot and Noelle's horse.

Cooking class

Today the older kids threw caution to the wind, and put their full effort into baking and making a FROM SCRATCH pie with me...we haven't eaten it yet, but we bet it will be awesome! Here are the pictures!

Last days of summer

As the last days of summer are on the horizon, we are trying to take advantage of the beautiful weather and do quite a few things outside. We have not been letterboxing in a few years, and I think it's time that Aidan and Liam make their own stamps and have a go at it.

Homeschooling, although we do it year round in one form or another, has been stepped up a level again today. Ryan had his first try with an online curriculum, and it was not successful, so I will go back to my typical unschooling ways....I should have just done that to begin with! Noelle is back into sewing again, and making t-shirt bags....with great success! She is also doing them for her brothers and totally enjoying herself!
